Nueva Luz Issue 30.1 The Mentor Issue

Nueva Luz Issue 30.1 – The Mentor Issue

Nueva Luz Vol. 30.1: Mentor Issue celebrates the life, work, and archival practice of photographer Marilyn Nance through a powerful collection of images drawn from her archive of 1985 New York City. The Mentor Issue honors artists whose practices have shaped generations of image makers and cultural workers, while offering deeper insight into the histories, processes, and lived experiences behind their work.

Curated by Qiana Mestrich, the issue traces the intersections of Black political life, family, labor, protest, joy, and everyday community, presenting Nance’s work as both personal document and vital historical record. Alongside the selection of never-published photographs, the issue includes original contact sheets, offering readers a rare look into Nance’s photographic process and the moments surrounding the final frame.

The publication also features a Dodge & Burn interview with Nance reflecting on photography and memory, as well as an essay by archival fellow Ashlyn Diaz exploring Black feminist archival practice and the living legacy of Nance’s work.

Designed and printed in an expanded 11 x 14 format inspired by the earliest editions of Nueva Luz, Vol. 30.1 honors the magazine’s history while reaffirming its continued relevance as a space for lens-based artists, cultural memory, and intergenerational dialogue
